Monday 2nd June
Monday bought with it an extremely cold morning which we spent looking around Orana Park Zoo. The zoo was enjoyable enough but a lot of the animals were either not in their enclosures or out of sight, so we were only able to see about half of them. Still, the entry fees all go towards good conservation work for the animals so we felt we supported a good cause all the same! One of the highlights was of course seeing the native Kiwi bird however we weren’t allowed to take photos of them so unfortunately we can’t show you!
After the zoo we took a trip to a small town called Sumner on the coast and spent some time wandering around this really beautiful little town. We explored Cave Rock (a huge rock that sits on the beach with various holes and tunnels lacing their way through it) and did much strolling along the beach and sea front. In one part of town lots of large metal containers had been set up to prevent rock slides, caused by earth quakes, falling on the road and some of the containers had been decorated with huge works of art which added some interest to an otherwise dull scene. We loved the idea of taking something that exists for a purely safety purpose and turning it into something beautiful.
These are the containers decorated with huge art works.
The final part of the day was spent looking around Christchurch city centre but what we saw there was deserving of it’s own post so that will be coming soon. Just a small update and some pretty pictures for you today but we hope you enjoyed it all the same.
